Anis Ahmed Takes Charge as Eastern Bank’s New Chairman

Anis Ahmed, a prominent entrepreneur and business leader, has been elected the new chairman of the board of directors of Eastern Bank PLC (EBL), one of Bangladesh’s leading private-sector banks. His appointment formally took effect on Monday, marking a significant change in the bank’s board leadership as it seeks to strengthen its financial foundation, accelerate digital transformation and expand its customer-focused banking services.

Before assuming the chairmanship, Ahmed served as a member of EBL’s executive committee and chaired the bank’s risk management committee. His previous responsibilities gave him direct exposure to the institution’s policy-making processes, governance structure and risk oversight. That experience is expected to be valuable as he takes on a broader role in shaping the bank’s strategic direction and long-term priorities.

Speaking after taking charge, Ahmed outlined several areas that he believes will be central to EBL’s next phase of development. He said the bank is entering a new stage in its evolution and indicated that the board would place particular emphasis on strengthening the participation and development of women in senior leadership positions.

The new chairman has also identified the strengthening of EBL’s financial base as a key priority. At the same time, the bank is expected to place greater emphasis on digital transformation, with the aim of providing customers with banking services that are more convenient, accessible and efficient.

The banking industry has undergone rapid technological change in recent years. Online transactions, digital payments, mobile banking and automated customer support have become increasingly important to the way customers manage their finances. Banks are consequently investing more heavily in technology, cybersecurity, digital infrastructure and data-driven services to meet changing customer expectations. Against this backdrop, EBL’s focus on digital expansion could play an important role in shaping its competitiveness in an increasingly technology-led financial sector.

Ahmed’s broader objective is to make EBL a more integral part of customers’ everyday financial lives. His approach suggests that the bank’s success should not be measured solely by conventional financial indicators. Customer confidence, service quality, technological capability and long-term financial resilience are also crucial to sustaining a modern banking institution. Under the new leadership, these factors are likely to remain central to the bank’s strategic and operational priorities.

Ahmed brings substantial experience from outside the banking industry. He is the founder and chief executive officer of Singapore-based multinational business group MGH Group, whose operations extend across 26 countries. The group is involved in supply-chain management and related solutions for leading global brands in sectors including fast fashion, e-commerce, automotive and electronics.

Its business interests extend beyond supply-chain operations. The group has activities involving private container terminal operations, global distribution and dealership businesses, logistics, food and beverage retail, and financial services. This diverse corporate background has given Ahmed experience in international trade, logistics, supply-chain management and cross-border business operations—areas that are increasingly relevant to financial institutions serving companies engaged in global commerce.

Ahmed has also been involved in Bangladesh’s technology-driven start-up sector. He is the founder of the ride-sharing platform OVA, the insurtech venture Wadaa dot Insure and the housing-focused platform Jatra. His association with technology-based businesses and innovative ventures has placed him among business leaders with an active interest in the country’s evolving start-up and entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Over the past decade, Ahmed has supported and encouraged technology-led entrepreneurship and innovative business initiatives in Bangladesh. His involvement has included backing emerging entrepreneurs and promoting technology-based ideas at a time when the country’s start-up ecosystem has been expanding and attracting greater attention.

His appointment as EBL chairman therefore brings together a broad range of experience spanning banking governance, corporate leadership, technology and entrepreneurship. The immediate challenge will be to translate his stated priorities into measurable outcomes. Strengthening the bank’s financial position, speeding up digital transformation and creating a more diverse leadership pipeline will require sustained strategic execution.

For EBL, the coming period will show how effectively the new leadership can turn these ambitions into practical initiatives. The impact of those efforts will ultimately be judged by the bank’s financial resilience, the quality and accessibility of its services, its ability to manage emerging risks and, most importantly, the extent to which customers experience tangible improvements in their everyday banking.
