Bangladesh’s Foreign Exchange Reserves Show Signs of Stability

Bangladesh’s foreign exchange reserves appear to be maintaining a relatively stable position, according to the latest figures released by Bangladesh Bank. At the close of trading on Tuesday, 28 July, the country’s gross foreign exchange reserves stood at US$36.457 billion.

The figure was reported in the latest update issued by Bangladesh Bank’s Foreign Exchange Reserve and Treasury Management Department. Foreign exchange reserves remain one of the key indicators of a country’s external economic strength, as they are closely linked to its ability to finance imports, meet external debt obligations, support international transactions and respond to volatility in the foreign exchange market.

However, the gross reserve figure does not represent the entire stock of foreign currency assets that can be immediately deployed. A more internationally comparable measure is the reserve position calculated under the International Monetary Fund’s Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual, sixth edition (BPM6) methodology. Under this measure, Bangladesh’s usable foreign exchange reserves stood at US$31.749 billion at the same time.

The difference between the gross and BPM6-based figures reflects the composition of the country’s reserve assets. Not all assets included in the gross reserve figure are necessarily available for immediate use. International accounting standards exclude certain liabilities, funds and assets subject to specific restrictions when calculating a country’s usable reserve position. As a result, the BPM6-based figure is generally lower than the gross reserve figure and provides a clearer indication of the foreign currency resources that are available under the relevant international methodology.

Foreign exchange reserves have become a closely watched economic indicator in Bangladesh in recent years. The reserve position is influenced by a range of factors, including export earnings, remittance inflows from Bangladeshis working overseas, import payments, external borrowing and foreign assistance. Conditions in the domestic foreign exchange market, exchange-rate movements and monetary policy decisions also play an important role in determining the direction of reserves.

Remittances and export proceeds are among the principal sources of foreign currency for Bangladesh. At the same time, the country requires substantial amounts of foreign currency to pay for imports, including fuel, industrial raw materials, food products, machinery and other essential goods. The balance between foreign currency earnings and import-related outflows therefore remains critical to maintaining reserve stability.

The latest figures suggest that Bangladesh continues to retain a substantial stock of foreign exchange reserves, although economists typically assess the reserve position not only by its absolute size but also by its underlying trend. Whether reserves are rising or falling over time, and how long they can support import payments and other external obligations, are important considerations when evaluating the broader health of the economy.

As of 28 July, Bangladesh’s gross reserves were US$36.457 billion, while reserves calculated under the IMF’s BPM6 methodology stood at US$31.749 billion. The future trajectory of the reserve position will depend largely on the strength of remittance and export earnings, the scale of import payments, external financing flows and developments in the foreign exchange market.

For policymakers, maintaining adequate reserves remains essential to safeguarding external payment capacity and supporting macroeconomic stability. Sustained growth in foreign currency inflows, alongside prudent management of import demand and external obligations, will be central to preserving the stability indicated by the latest reserve figures.
