A ten-month-old infant has died from measles at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, raising the total number of child fatalities from the disease at the facility to 72.
The infant passed away on Tuesday night, 8 September, while undergoing treatment in the hospital’s isolation ward. According to attending medical officers, the patient was brought to the facility from Mymensingh Sadar on the night of 4 September displaying severe symptoms of measles. Clinical evaluations subsequently revealed that the child was also suffering from acute pneumonia, a dangerous secondary complication often associated with viral measles infections in young infants.
The outbreak continues to place significant strain on healthcare resources at the regional hospital. Over the preceding 24 hours, medical personnel admitted 22 new child patients with symptoms of measles to the dedicated isolation unit. During the same period, 19 children recovered sufficiently to be discharged. Currently, 93 children remain admitted in the hospital’s isolation ward, receiving medical care for varying degrees of infection severity.
Official hospital records indicate that between 17 March and 8 September, a total of 3,983 children presented with symptoms of measles and were admitted for treatment at the hospital. Of those admitted over this nearly six-month period, 3,818 patients successfully recovered and returned home following medical intervention.
Public health officials emphasize that measles remains a highly contagious viral illness capable of causing severe health complications, particularly among malnourished children or those with incomplete routine immunization records. Secondary infections such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and severe dehydration represent the primary causes of mortality in affected infants. Medical experts stress the urgency of ensuring full childhood vaccination coverage across the region to stem further transmission, alongside advising parents to seek immediate medical attention upon noticing early symptoms such as high fever, coughing, and characteristic skin rashes.
