The race for the English Premier League title has reached a critical juncture, with Arsenal and Manchester City locked in a high-stakes battle for supremacy. As the season nears its conclusion, statistical models and football analysts are divided on whether the Gunners will secure their first league title since 2004 or if Pep Guardiola’s side will retain their crown.
Currently, Arsenal sit at the top of the table with 76 points, while Manchester City follow with 70 points. Although Arsenal hold a six-point lead, Manchester City have two games in hand. If City win both of these additional fixtures, the two sides will be level on points, making goal difference the primary tiebreaker.
Arsenal recently bolstered their position with a 3-0 victory over Fulham. This result was significant not only for the three points but also for increasing their goal difference, which now stands four goals superior to City’s. Throughout the season, Arsenal have won ten matches by a narrow one-goal margin, leading some critics to label them “1-0 winners.” However, the emphatic win over Fulham suggests a shift in momentum that has pleased manager Mikel Arteta.
A significant factor in the current analysis is the difficulty of the remaining schedule. Opta’s supercomputer currently gives Arsenal a 79.7% probability of winning the league, largely due to their upcoming opponents.
| Team | Remaining Opponents (Current Rank) | Venue |
| Arsenal | West Ham United (17th) | Away |
| Arsenal | Burnley (Relegated) | Home |
| Arsenal | Crystal Palace (14th) | Away |
| Manchester City | Everton (11th) | Away |
| Manchester City | Brentford (6th) | Away |
| Manchester City | Crystal Palace (14th) | Home |
| Manchester City | Bournemouth (8th) | Away |
| Manchester City | Aston Villa (5th) | Home |
The footballing community remains split on the eventual outcome. Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney, speaking on BBC Match of the Day, declared Arsenal the clear favourites. Rooney predicted that Arsenal could win the title by a five-point margin, citing their easier run-in and expecting Manchester City to drop points.
Conversely, former Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart, who won the title in 2012 and 2014, maintains faith in his former club. Hart pointed to the “strong spine” of the City squad, highlighting players such as Gianluigi Donnarumma, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, and Erling Haaland as the decisive factors in the final weeks.
Media analysts have also weighed in:
Paul Merson: The former Arsenal forward believes the title will ultimately be decided by goal difference, favouring Arsenal due to their specific opponents.
Jamie Redknapp: While acknowledging Arsenal as favourites, Redknapp argued on Sky Sports that the 80% probability figure is too high. He noted that Manchester City possess the capability to “blow any team away,” suggesting the race remains far from over.
With Arsenal having spent 209 days at the top of the table this season, the pressure remains on Mikel Arteta’s squad to maintain their form against lower-ranked sides, while Manchester City must navigate a more congested and difficult schedule to close the gap.
