Ed Sheeran’s high-profile Loop Tour has been thrown into unprecedented turmoil following a wave of artist resignations. A multitude of supporting acts have pulled out of the international roadshow in solidarity with American rapper Macklemore, who was abruptly removed from the line-up after speaking out in support of Palestine during a concert.
The escalating dispute originated on 4 September at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Taking the stage, Macklemore delivered a clear political statement, declaring “Free Palestine” to the audience before performing his protest single Hind’s Hall. The track, originally released in 2024 to support student demonstrations at Columbia University, openly criticises Israel’s military operations in Gaza. Visually, the venue’s large displays broadcast footage detailing the widespread destruction across the region. During a second appearance at the same venue the following evening, Macklemore clarified his stance, emphasizing that opposing apartheid and military action is not an attack on the Jewish community, but rather a necessary stand so the displaced people of Gaza and the West Bank know they are not forgotten.
The performance immediately ignited a sharp backlash. Advocacy groups, including the Israeli-American Council and StopAntisemitism, launched campaigns demanding the rapper’s removal. Pop singer Pink amplified the criticism by sharing a related post on Instagram, though she later clarified that she was not advocating for his removal or opposing the Palestinian plight, but was instead expressing concern for the comfort of Jewish attendees.
The pressure culminated on Monday when Macklemore confirmed his removal from the remaining dates. He pointed directly to Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts and the New England Patriots, as a major force behind the decision. Kraft publicly acknowledged refusing to let the rapper perform at his venue, framing the stance as a refusal to let the stadium be used as a platform for perceived hate speech and divisive rhetoric. Promoter Messina Touring Group subsequently cited venue-level objections that threatened to force the cancellation of the entire tour, potentially disrupting plans for hundreds of thousands of ticket holders.
Sheeran addressed the fallout shortly after, explaining that the decision rested with the promoter and stadium management rather than himself. The English singer-songwriter noted that while the ongoing conflict in the Middle East deeply distresses him, he consciously chooses to keep his own concerts free of political debate to protect a diverse, multi-generational audience and preserve the livelihoods of his touring crew.
Despite Sheeran’s explanation, his supporting roster stood firm alongside Macklemore. Finneas, the Grammy-winning producer and brother of Billie Eilish, announced his withdrawal on social media, asserting that artists must never be silenced for advocating on behalf of the oppressed. Danish outfit Lukas Graham voiced similar sentiments, maintaining that artists should speak freely on human rights without financial coercion, while Irish singer-songwriter Aaron Rowe and traditional folk band Beoga also severed ties with the tour. What began as a single performance has now transformed into a major industry debate surrounding political expression, corporate sponsorship, and artistic freedom on the global stage.
