Australia Change Squad to Avoid Bangladesh Whitewash

Australia have made a change to their squad for the second Test against Bangladesh as they seek to avoid a series whitewash after suffering a heavy defeat in Darwin.

The hosts were beaten by nine wickets in the opening Test, leaving Bangladesh 1–0 ahead in the two-match series. With the final match now carrying greater significance for Australia, opener Jake Weatherald has been left out of the squad and replaced by Matt Renshaw.

Weatherald struggled to make an impact in Darwin. He scored 23 in the first innings before being dismissed without scoring in the second. His disappointing return has resulted in him losing his place ahead of the decisive Test in Mackay.

Renshaw, meanwhile, returns to Australia’s Test squad after a lengthy absence. The 30-year-old batter last played a Test match against India in 2023. His recall gives Australia another option at the top of the batting order as they look to address the problems exposed during the opening match.

Australia’s batting was unable to withstand Bangladesh’s attack in Darwin, while the visitors produced a disciplined performance to secure a convincing victory. The result has put Australia under pressure ahead of the second Test, with another defeat set to hand Bangladesh a 2–0 series victory.

The second and final Test is scheduled to begin in Mackay on 22 August. Australia must win the match to level the series, while Bangladesh need only avoid defeat to secure a historic series triumph. Having already taken the lead, Bangladesh will now have the opportunity to claim their first Test series victory over Australia if they can repeat their performance in the opening match.

Renshaw’s inclusion also adds another dimension to the debate surrounding Australia’s top order. His return after more than two years away from Test cricket reflects the selectors’ decision to make an immediate change following the batting failure in Darwin.

Australia’s squad for the second Test comprises captain Pat Cummins, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and Beau Webster.

For Australia, the Mackay Test is now effectively a must-win contest. Bangladesh, on the other hand, will arrive with the confidence of having already taken the lead and will be aiming to complete a series victory rather than merely defend their advantage.
