In the fortnight following the national parliamentary elections, at least twelve previously sealed Awami League offices across the country have been reopened. In certain locations, while offices remain closed, the party has displayed slogans and banners signalling its ongoing presence. According to party sources, these actions primarily aim to gauge government attitudes and assess potential obstacles to the bail and release of imprisoned party leaders and activists.

Central Directives and Local Initiatives

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, currently abroad in India, has instructed party members within Bangladesh to gradually resume political activity. Leadership at the district and metropolitan levels, particularly third- and fourth-tier leaders, have been spearheading these initiatives. In some cases, there have been indirect signals of cooperation or tacit consent from local BNP leaders. Party supporters, having voted in recent elections, are expected to demonstrate a degree of sympathy for these efforts.

Party officials emphasise that securing bail for mid- and senior-level leaders could enhance organisational momentum and potentially pave the way for exiled leaders to return if legal hurdles are minimised.

Recent Bail and Release Developments

The following table summarises recent bail and release activities within the party:

DateLeader / ActivistPosition / LocationBail / Release StatusNotes
18 FebJebunnesa AfrozVice President, Barishal Metropolitan Awami League; former MPBailReleased for health reasons
19 FebDabirul IslamFormer MP, Thakurgaon-21.5 years in prisonReleased due to serious illness
23 FebTalukdar Mohammad YunusGeneral Secretary, Barishal District; former MPSurrendered & bailSenior party leader

These releases have instilled renewed optimism within party ranks.

Symbolic Office Reopenings

Across the country, the party has demonstrated activity through selective office reopenings and public displays:

Gopalganj Mukshudpur: Raising of national and party flags at the Upazila office

Maijdee, Noakhali: Slogans by student league activists at the district office

Dhaka, Dhanmondi: Display of national flags and portraits of Bangabandhu at the President’s political office

Panchagarh, Chaklaha Union: Office opened in presence of a local BNP leader

Currently, Dhaka hosts three major operational offices—Gulistan, Dhanmondi, and Tejgaon—following 18 months of inactivity since the 2024 elections.

Strategic and Political Considerations

Analysts suggest that the Awami League’s strategy follows a two-pronged approach: maintaining a visible yet limited field presence and evaluating government responses. The party’s assessment of governmental stance is crucial, while votes from BNP supporters could also provide strategic advantage. Developing effective local leadership remains critical for long-term governance, as political influence from abroad is limited.

Political analyst Mohiuddin Ahmed observed, “For the Awami League to re-enter normal political processes, it must cultivate effective leadership domestically. Coordination with overseas leadership is necessary, but success will depend on evolving political realities.”

Through calculated steps based on government restrictions, bail outcomes, and supporter reactions, the party appears to be gradually reasserting its presence. Although activities remain limited, these measures are widely interpreted as a clear signal of political revival.
