Woman Beaten Over Vegetable Theft Claim

A woman in northern Bangladesh has reportedly been tied to a tree and assaulted after being accused of stealing vegetables, an incident that has sparked widespread criticism following the circulation of a video on social media.

The incident took place on Tuesday (14 April) in the village of Banshipara under the Dantbhanga Union of Roumari Upazila in Kurigram district. According to local accounts, the woman, aged around 41, was allegedly caught while picking bitter gourds (korola) from the farmland of local farmer Farhad Hossain.

Witnesses claim that she was apprehended on the spot with a sack allegedly filled with harvested vegetables. The matter was then reportedly communicated to her family members. Around 9:00 a.m., her husband arrived at the scene.

Footage shared online shows a disturbing scene in which the woman is tied tightly to a tree using ropes typically used for cattle. Several individuals, including women, are seen restraining her while others stand nearby holding sticks. The video further shows her husband repeatedly striking her with a stick as she cries out in distress. Although a number of people are present at the scene, no visible intervention is made to stop the assault, and some individuals appear to be filming the incident.

The video has triggered strong reactions on social media, with many condemning both the alleged act of theft and the subsequent vigilante-style punishment. Legal experts and human rights observers have noted that taking the law into one’s own hands is not permitted under Bangladeshi law, regardless of the accusation.

Farhad Hossain, the owner of the land, stated that theft of bitter gourds from his field had been a recurring issue. He claimed that he had been monitoring the situation and that the woman was caught red-handed with a sack of harvested produce. He further said that her husband was informed and later arrived at the scene, after which the physical assault occurred.

A member of the Dantbhanga Union Parishad, Abul Hossain, confirmed that the woman had been detained along with the vegetables. He added that the husband later arrived and “disciplined” her before taking her home, while also acknowledging that the physical violence was inappropriate.

The officer-in-charge of Roumari Police Station, Kawser Ali, stated that the police had seen the video footage. He emphasised that tying someone to a tree and assaulting them is entirely illegal. He added that appropriate legal action would be taken if a formal complaint is lodged.
