Bangladesh Coach Thomas Dooley Hesitant Over Kyrgyzstan Invitation Ahead of SAFF Championship

Bangladesh national football team head coach Thomas Dooley has expressed reluctance to accept an invitation from Kyrgyzstan for a tri-nation tournament during the upcoming September FIFA window. Instead, the American-German manager prefers scheduling friendly fixtures against similarly ranked opponents to build squad confidence ahead of the home SAFF Championship in November.

Speaking to media members following a meeting of the National Team Management Committee on Wednesday, Dooley outlined the significant logistical hurdles the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) faces in securing suitable international matches.

Global Tournament Schedules Limit Fixture Options

Dooley explained that finding comparable opposition for the September window has proven increasingly difficult due to overlapping regional competitions around the world.

• Widespread Commitments: The BFF reached out to member associations across the Caribbean, Europe, and the Arab world, but most teams are already committed to official regional tournaments, including the UEFA Nations League and the Arab Cup.

• Regional Alternatives Unavailable: Bangladesh also sought to organize a friendly against ASEAN side Singapore, but that option was ruled out as Singapore prepares for the ASEAN Championship.

Concerns Over Team Morale Before Home Tournament

Kyrgyzstan formally extended an invitation for Bangladesh to participate in a tri-nation tournament in Bishkek alongside higher-ranked nations sitting near the top 100 in the FIFA World Rankings. However, Dooley voiced strong reservations about taking on significantly stronger opponents at this stage of preparation.

Dooley noted that suffering heavy defeats against top-100 opposition right before hosting the SAFF Championship in November could undermine player confidence and team morale. The manager reiterated that playing balanced fixtures against equal or slightly higher-ranked sides remains the ideal preparation to instill belief and momentum ahead of the regional flagship tournament.
