Bangladesh Coach Thomas Dooley Tempers Expectations Over Fulham Winger

Bangladesh national football team head coach Thomas Dooley has expressed strong interest in integrating British-Bangladeshi winger Farhaan Ali Wahid into the national setup, whilst firmly managing public expectations regarding an immediate international call-up. The teenager recently caught the spotlight across South Asian football after making his senior pre-season debut for English Premier League outfit Fulham.

Speaking to journalists following a meeting of the National Team Management Committee, Dooley emphasised that age remains secondary to consistent performance and long-term readiness when selecting players for the national side. Whilst the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) is actively attempting to secure Farhaan’s clearance ahead of the upcoming September FIFA international window, Dooley urged patience, noting that no premature guarantees would be issued.

“I haven’t spoken to him directly yet; we need to have a proper conversation,” Dooley stated, pointing out that two months remain before the next international fixtures commence. He cautioned that if Farhaan features in further matches for Fulham and suffers an injury, early inclusion plans would be disrupted. Nonetheless, Dooley acknowledged the teenager’s immense technical ability and high ceiling, remarking that whilst Farhaan is an exceptional prospect with a bright future ahead, assessing his immediate contribution to the national team requires careful, realistic evaluation.

Farhaan, 19, generated widespread excitement among Bangladeshi supporters on 25 July after stepping onto the pitch for Fulham’s senior squad in a pre-season friendly against Norwich City at Motspur Park. Entering as a second-half substitute, the energetic wide man played 45 minutes under newly appointed Fulham manager Álvaro Arbeloa and nearly marked his debut with a goal, striking a curling long-range effort that narrowly missed the target. Although Fulham ultimately fell to a 2-0 defeat, Farhaan’s involvement with the first team represented a significant career milestone.

The rapid rise of Farhaan comes amid a broader, concerted strategy by the Bangladesh Football Federation to identify, track, and recruit foreign-born dual-nationality talent developing within European football academies. This recruitment drive gained massive momentum following the high-profile integration of former Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury into the national setup.

For Dooley, Farhaan’s youth is far from a disadvantage. The American-German tactician affirmed that any teenager competing within a Premier League club’s structure warrants close, continuous monitoring. He reiterated that any player capable of elevating the national team’s competitive standards will remain firmly in his tactical plans for future international assignments.
