Bangladesh has taken complete control in the second Test of the series against Ireland at Mirpur. After dismissing the visitors for 265 in their first innings, the Tigers ended the third day of the match with 156 for the loss of just one wicket in their second innings, securing a commanding lead of 367 runs. At stumps, the unbeaten batsmen were Sadman Islam on 69* and Mominul Haque on 19*.
Beyond the cricketing action, an unexpected tremor shook the stadium during play, briefly causing panic and a temporary halt in proceedings. Despite the scare, the Bangladeshi side remained unshaken in spirit. At the post-day press conference, senior spinner Taijul Islam spoke about the team’s approach, emphasising the importance of process and performance over immediate results. “It is hard to predict the next two years, but as a player, your performance dictates how far you can go. The process is crucial,” he said, reflecting the team’s measured strategy of winning the game step by step.
Ireland attempted to build resistance at the start of the day, with Lorcan Tucker scoring a brilliant 75* to anchor one end, supported by Andy McBrine. However, the Bangladesh bowlers’ relentless attack eventually broke their resistance, with Taijul claiming four wickets, ably assisted by pacers Khaled Ahmed and Ibadat Hossain.
Opting not to enforce the follow-on, Bangladesh’s captain Shanto allowed the bowlers rest, and the team batted confidently. Opener Mahmudullah Joy and Sadman Islam forged a solid partnership, maintaining pressure on the Irish bowlers. Joy fell for 60, but Sadman and Mominul ensured the innings continued. In just 37 overs, Bangladesh amassed 156 runs at an aggressive run rate above four, signalling their intent to secure a comprehensive victory.
Off the field, Taijul reflected on his role leading the spin department in the absence of Shakib Al Hasan, stressing the importance of guiding younger players through experience. With the fourth day likely to see the lead stretch closer to 500, Bangladesh is poised to send Ireland back to bat, setting up a near-insurmountable challenge with spin at the forefront.
