Bangladesh Commemorates 127th Birth Anniversary Of National Poet

Bangladesh is celebrating the 127th birth anniversary of its national poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam, marking the first time the occasion has been observed with state-sponsored formalities since he was officially granted national poet status by the government. Affectionately known as the “Rebel Poet” (Bidrohi Kobi), Nazrul remains a towering figure in Bengali literature, celebrated for providing the linguistic framework for both romance and rebellion, and for inspiring generations to protest against exploitation and discrimination.

Born on 11 Jyeshtha 1306 of the Bengali calendar (24 May 1899) in Churulia, a village in the Asansol Sadar subdivision of the Burdwan district in West Bengal, India, Nazrul emerged from severe poverty to revolutionize Bengali literature, poetry, and music.

Chronological Milestones and Creative Outputs

Nazrul’s life was defined by extreme hardship, structural shifts, and diverse professional roles. Despite having his institutional education cut short by the early death of his father, he went on to build the largest individual repository of music in the Bengali language.

The verified historical milestones and creative achievements of Kazi Nazrul Islam are structured in the table below:

Chronological Phase / Metric Professional Role / Output Historic Context & Impact
Early Childhood Education Maktab Student & Leto Performer Began literary journey by writing folk plays for theatrical troupes.
Adolescence & Early Youth Baker’s Assistant, Mu’azzin, Soldier Supported his family from age 10; fought in the British Indian Army.
Literary Masterpieces “Bidrohi” & “Kamal Pasha” Established his anti-imperialist stance and international historical awareness.
Musical Catalog Size Approximately 3,500 Songs Created Nazrul Geeti, introducing unique ragas and musical variety.
Political Incarceration Author of “Rajbandir Jabanbandi” Imprisoned multiple times by the British government for sedition.
1942 Health Collapse Loss of Speech and Mental Faculties Struck by an incurable neurological illness at the height of his career.
1972 State Repatriation Relocation to Independent Bangladesh Brought to Dhaka from India with his family by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The Evolution of a Rebel: Poetry and Resistance

Nazrul’s early life was a continuous struggle for survival. At the age of ten, following his father’s death, he took on the financial responsibility for his family, working as a caretaker at a local mausoleum, a mu’azzin at a mosque, and later as a worker in a bread shop. His literary genius blossomed early when he joined Leto (local musical theatre) troupes, where he began composing poems and plays. As he matured, his professional career expanded into journalism, active politics, and military service during the First World War.

His literary breakthrough came with the publication of his iconic poem “Bidrohi” (The Rebel), in which he made his fierce opposition to oppressors absolutely clear. In the poem, he declared his untamed nature, writing lines that translates to:

“I am the sudden, trembling earthquake in a terrified world. / I seize the hood of the snake-king Vasuki, / I snatch the fiery wings of the celestial messenger Gabriel! / I am the divine child, I am restless, / I am arrogant, and with my teeth, I tear the hem of Mother Earth’s robes.”

Around the same period, his poem “Kamal Pasha” highlighted his international political awareness, offering a critique of the Indian Muslim community’s Khilafat Movement against the backdrop of contemporary Turkish history.

Humanism, Secularism, and the Tragic Eclipse

Beyond his fiery political poetry, Nazrul was a champion of equality, romance, and humanism. He used his platform to vehemently condemn communalism, religious bigotry, and the social marginalisation of women. His writing spoke directly to the working classes, building an unbreakable bond with ordinary citizens. Because of his outspoken anti-imperialist stances and active literary rebellion against the British Raj, the colonial government imprisoned him multiple times. While incarcerated, he famously authored “Rajbandir Jabanbandi” (The Deposition of a Royal Prisoner).

Tragedy struck the poet in 1942 when, at the age of 43, he was struck down by a mysterious neurological illness. The disease robbed him of his speech and mental faculties, reducing the fierce rebel to a child-like state and fulfilling a tragic prediction of mental decline once feared by his late contemporary, Rabindranath Tagore.

In 1972, following the independence of Bangladesh, the nation’s founder, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, officially repatriated Nazrul and his family from India to Dhaka. He was accorded the highest state honors and designated as the National Poet of Bangladesh. Nazrul spent his final years under medical supervision at the PG Hospital (now BSMMU) in Dhaka. Following prolonged illness, he passed away on 29 August 1976. In accordance with his wishes, he was laid to rest with full state honours adjacent to the Dhaka University Central Mosque, where millions continue to pay their respects.
