Former Serbian President Boris Tadić has warned that Bangladesh is currently facing a variety of challenges, many of which originate from its neighbouring countries. He made these remarks during a speed talk at the ‘Bay of Bengal Conversation 2025’, held on Sunday at the Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka. The three-day conference, organised by the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS), began on Saturday.
Tadić emphasised that Bangladesh must strengthen its cooperation with India, describing it as an “essential but complex task”. He noted, “India is a vast and intricate nation that is poised to become one of the world’s leading powers over the next decade.”
Drawing parallels with China’s rise, Tadić observed, “In the 1990s, China remained largely under the radar, with the Western world, Europe, and the United States paying little attention. Yet, statistical trends indicated its rapid growth, and today, China stands as an unavoidable global power, one of the few countries capable of competing with the United States. India is now on a similar trajectory.”
On Bangladesh’s relations with ASEAN nations, Tadić highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships. “Bangladesh must consider long-term alliances beyond market size or population. The region’s geopolitical significance, particularly its maritime corridors, impacts not only Bangladesh but also India, China, and Japan. ASEAN countries could become crucial partners in the future,” he said.
Analysts note that Tadić’s comments underscore the necessity for Bangladesh to adopt a forward-looking diplomatic strategy, balancing relationships with regional powers while strengthening ties with emerging global players. Such proactive engagement is seen as vital to securing both economic growth and national security in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
