Bangladesh Marks National Constitution Day Commemorating Historic 1972 Adoption

Bangladesh marks National Constitution Day on 4 November, commemorating the historic occasion in 1972 when the Constituent Assembly adopted the supreme law of the sovereign republic. The adoption of the constitution represented the culmination of decades of political struggle, the foundational ideals of the 1971 Liberation War, and the collective aspiration to establish a democratic state grounded in social justice and human dignity.

Following its formal adoption by the Constituent Assembly, the constitution came into force on 16 December 1972, coinciding with the nation’s first Victory Day. Formulating and enacting a comprehensive constitutional framework within a single year of achieving independence stands as a major achievement in post-war statecraft and legal development.

The drafting process initiated on 11 April 1972, when the Constituent Assembly appointed a 34-member Constitution Drafting Committee under the chairmanship of Dr. Kamal Hossain. The committee conducted exhaustive deliberations, examined constitutional precedents from democratic nations worldwide, and incorporated feedback from civic groups and legal experts before submitting the finalized draft to the assembly for parliamentary debate.

As originally enacted in 1972, the constitution comprised 11 distinct parts, 153 articles, and four primary schedules. Over subsequent decades, legislative amendments increased the total number of schedules to seven. The original text enshrined four fundamental principles of state policy: nationalism, socialism, democracy, and secularism.

Functioning as the supreme legal authority in Bangladesh, the constitution defines the structural framework of the republic. It establishes the powers, jurisdictions, and checks and balances across the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, whilst guaranteeing fundamental human rights and civil liberties for all citizens.

The annual observance of National Constitution Day on 4 November provides an opportunity to reflect on the historical significance of the nation’s supreme law. The occasion underscores the imperative of upholding the rule of law, preserving democratic values, and protecting the constitutional rights of every citizen across Bangladesh.
