Bangladesh Measles Death Toll Passes 1,200 Amid Spiking Infection Rate

Health authorities in Bangladesh have confirmed that the nationwide death toll from measles and related symptoms has surpassed 1,200. According to the latest regular health bulletin issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Monday, 19 October, five more patients succumbed to measles-like symptoms over a 24-hour period.

This latest development brings the total number of fatalities this year to 1,201. Laboratory tests have definitively confirmed measles as the cause of death in 104 of these cases, whilst 1,097 individuals died after presenting with clinical symptoms associated with the disease.

The health division of the capital recorded the highest concentration of recent casualties. Over the 24 hours up to 8:00 AM on Sunday, Dhaka division reported two deaths attributed to measles symptoms, representing the single largest regional tally for the day.

Hospital admissions across the country continue to rise at an alarming rate. Medical facilities nationwide admitted 1,342 new patients suffering from confirmed or suspected measles over the same period.

A regional breakdown of the latest admissions reveals a heavy concentration of cases in major metropolitan areas:

  • Dhaka Division: 587 new admissions

  • Chittagong Division: 292 new admissions

  • Sylhet Division: 136 new admissions

  • Barisal Division: 123 new admissions

  • Khulna Division: 73 new admissions

  • Mymensingh Division: 69 new admissions

  • Rajshahi Division: 40 new admissions

  • Rangpur Division: 22 new admissions

Cumulative figures compiled by the health directorate paint a stark picture of the outbreak’s progression since tracking commenced earlier this spring. Between 15 March and the current date, a total of 190,663 individuals presenting with measles symptoms have been admitted to various healthcare institutions across the nation. Of those hospitalized, 183,042 patients have completed treatment and been discharged.

In total, public health surveillance has identified 214,551 suspected measles cases nationwide since 15 March. Rigorous laboratory testing has officially confirmed the virus in 23,157 of those instances.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads rapidly through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. While preventable through effective vaccination, the disease presents severe risks to young children, malnourished individuals, and those with compromised immune systems. Common clinical signs include high fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, and a characteristic rash that gradually spreads across the body. Severe complications often include pneumonia, encephalitis, severe diarrhoea, and middle ear infections.

Public health specialists emphasise that robust immunisation drives, combined with early clinical intervention, remain essential to curbing transmission rates and mitigating life-threatening complications as hospitals manage the surge in admissions.
