Bangladesh have been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following a breach of the over-rate regulations during the second One Day International of their ongoing series against New Zealand. The side, led by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, were found to be significantly behind the required over rate, resulting in a deduction from their match fee.
According to an official ICC statement, Bangladesh were assessed as being two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into account. The match officials concluded that the required overs had not been completed within the stipulated time frame, prompting disciplinary action under the ICC Code of Conduct.
The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Gazi Sohel, with support from third umpire Nitin Menon and fourth umpire Masudur Rahman Mukul. The matter was reviewed by Andy Pycroft of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, who confirmed the breach.
Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for each over their side fails to bowl within the allotted time. As Bangladesh were two overs short, the cumulative penalty amounted to a 10 per cent deduction from the team’s match fees.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz accepted the charge on behalf of the team, thereby eliminating the need for a formal disciplinary hearing. Acceptance of responsibility in such cases typically results in the expedited conclusion of proceedings, as stipulated under ICC regulations.
Over-rate offences are treated seriously in international cricket, as maintaining the required pace of play is considered essential for scheduling, broadcasting commitments, and the overall spectator experience.
