Bangladesh Government Sets Boro Grain Procurement Targets

The Government of Bangladesh has formalised its strategy for the upcoming Boro procurement season, aiming to secure a total of 1.8 million metric tonnes of rice and paddy, alongside 50,000 metric tonnes of wheat. This decision was finalised during a meeting of the Food Planning and Monitoring Committee (FPMC) held on Wednesday, 22 April. Following the session, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, acting as the chairman of the committee, detailed the state’s procurement prices and timelines during a press briefing.

Procurement Prices and Volume Targets

To ensure price stability and provide fair returns to local farmers, the government has established specific rates for different categories of grain. The procurement of paddy and wheat is scheduled to commence on 3 May, while the collection of processed rice will begin on 15 May. Both operations are slated to conclude on 31 August.

The following table outlines the government’s procurement targets and the fixed rates per kilogram:

Commodity Price per Kilogram (BDT) Total Target (Metric Tonnes)
Boro Paddy 36.00 500,000
Parboiled Rice 49.00 1,100,000
Atap (Sun-dried) Rice 48.00 200,000
Wheat 36.00 50,000
Total Grain Volume 1,850,000

National Demand and Production Outlook

Addressing the national food security situation, the Home Minister noted that the annual national demand for rice stands at approximately 42.4 million metric tonnes. Current domestic production levels are closely aligned with this requirement, indicating that there is no imminent shortage of the staple grain.

Official meteorological reports suggest a favourable outlook for the remainder of the season, with no significant natural disasters predicted. Given the positive weather conditions, the government anticipates that total production may exceed initial estimates. Such a surplus would further bolster the national security stock, which the government maintains to mitigate risks associated with market volatility or unforeseen emergencies.

Operational Logistics and Oversight

The procurement window is strictly defined, though the FPMC has clarified that the deadline of 31 August remains flexible. Should the need arise to extend the collection period to meet the 1.85 million tonne target, the committee will convene a follow-up meeting to assess the situation and adjust the timeline accordingly.

The primary objective of this state intervention is twofold: to maintain a robust national food reserve and to prevent price manipulation in the local market. By purchasing directly from the domestic sector, the government aims to support the agricultural economy during the peak Boro harvest, which is the largest contributor to the country’s annual grain output. Authorities have been instructed to ensure that the procurement process remains transparent and accessible to genuine farmers across all districts.
