Bangladesh captain Jamal Bhuyan has expressed firm confidence that his side can compete on equal terms with a higher-ranked Vietnam team in their upcoming international friendly, despite a notable gap in global standings.
Ranked 108th in the world, Vietnam national football team sit 72 places above Bangladesh national football team in the FIFA rankings. Matches against such opposition have been rare for Bangladesh in recent years, making this encounter particularly significant. Nevertheless, Bhuyan remains optimistic about his team’s progress and ability to rise to the occasion.
The two sides are set to meet for the third time at SVD Hang Day Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 6:00 PM Bangladesh time. Their previous encounters have offered valuable experience, and this latest fixture is expected to provide another stern test.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Bhuyan acknowledged the challenge ahead but highlighted the steady development of his squad. He remarked that while the match would undoubtedly be difficult, Bangladesh have improved considerably and possess the belief required to challenge a strong Vietnamese side.
Head coach Javier Cabrera views the friendly as a crucial preparatory step ahead of a more consequential fixture. Bangladesh are due to face Singapore national football team on 31 March in their final Asian Cup qualifying match, and Cabrera is keen to use the Vietnam clash to fine-tune tactics and build confidence.
Cabrera emphasised that Vietnam represent one of Southeast Asia’s strongest footballing nations, making this match an invaluable opportunity. Testing his players against such high-calibre opposition, he noted, would help them assess their readiness for competitive fixtures and sharpen their overall performance.
The Bangladesh coach is also wary of Vietnam’s strengthened squad, which now includes emerging talents such as Nguyen Xuan Son and Brazilian-born Hoang Hen. Their inclusion has added depth and dynamism to the Vietnamese lineup, presenting an even greater challenge. Cabrera, however, welcomed this as a positive test, expressing hope that his team would be able to measure themselves against Vietnam at full strength.
Meanwhile, the recent arrival of Hamza Choudhury has generated considerable interest. Having joined the squad only yesterday, the midfielder is still adjusting to local conditions, including weather and time differences. Cabrera indicated that no immediate decision has been made regarding his participation, stressing the importance of monitoring his readiness before including him in the matchday squad.
