Bangladesh Records New Dengue Death and 473 Fresh Hospitalisations

The dengue situation in Bangladesh shows little sign of improvement as the Aedes mosquito-borne disease continues to strain the national healthcare system. Over the last 24 hours, the country recorded another death from the viral illness, while 473 fresh patients were admitted to various hospitals nationwide.

The figures were officially disclosed on Sunday, 19 July 2026, via a press release issued by the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). According to the department, the geographical distribution of the latest cases indicates that the capital and its surrounding areas remain the primary hotspot for transmission.

Out of the 473 new cases registered across the country, the highest concentration was observed within the Dhaka Division, which accounts for both the North and South City Corporations. This region registered 165 new hospitalisations within the single-day period, with the metropolitan area alone accounting for 81 of those patients.

Beyond the capital city, regional health centres are also facing a notable influx of patients. Outside Dhaka, the Barisal Division recorded the highest number of new admissions with 75 cases, closely followed by the Khulna Division, which logged 66 hospitalisations. The remaining caseload from other administrative divisions includes 63 patients in Chittagong, 42 in Rangpur, 36 in Mymensingh, and 23 in Rajshahi. The northeastern Sylhet Division registered the fewest admissions, with only three new patients entering hospital care over the 24-hour window.

The solitary fatality recorded during this latest reporting cycle occurred within the jurisdiction of the Dhaka South City Corporation. Medical officials confirmed that the deceased was a woman aged between 41 and 45 who succumbed to the infection whilst undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

According to consolidated data provided by the DGHS, the total number of dengue infections documented across the country since 1 January has reached 10,485. Encouragingly, 9,440 of these patients have made a full recovery and have been formally discharged from medical facilities.

Nevertheless, the rising mortality rate remains a matter of serious concern for public health experts. The nationwide death toll for the year has now risen to 34. The data indicates that the urban centres are bearing the brunt of the fatalities, with Dhaka South City Corporation logging the highest individual tally of 11 deaths, followed by Dhaka North City Corporation with six casualties.

At present, 1,011 dengue patients are undergoing treatment in authorised public and private medical facilities across the country. In light of the ongoing transmission, medical professionals and civic authorities have renewed their calls for public vigilance. Citizens are strongly urged to eliminate potential breeding sites of the Aedes mosquito by regularly draining stagnant water from containers inside and around their households.
