Published: 16 Dec 2025, 05:24 am

Bangladesh’s 54th Victory Day will be commemorated with full honours in Kolkata, India, alongside a series of events organised by the Eastern Command of the Indian Army. The celebrations honour the historic triumph of 1971 and the sacrifices made by countless freedom fighters, reinforcing the enduring friendship between Bangladesh and India.

A delegation of Bangladeshi war veterans and military officers has already arrived in Kolkata to participate in the four-day observance. The group includes eight distinguished freedom fighters and two serving officers, accompanied by family members. Among the delegation are Brigadier General M. Lutfor Rahman and Major Sher-e-Shahbaz with their spouses. Other veterans attending include Mohammad Habibul Alam, Major (Retd.) Alok Kumar Gupta, Major (Retd.) Kamrul Abedin, Major (Retd.) Monish Dewan, Major (Retd.) Mohammad Abdul Hakim, Major (Retd.) Hafizur Rahman, Brigadier General (Retd.) Mohammad Shamsul Huda, and Abdullah Hil Shafi.

The main event will take place at Fort William in Kolkata, where representatives from Bangladesh and India will lay floral tributes at the Victory Memorial, honouring the martyrs who fell during the Liberation War. The ceremony will also pay tribute to the joint efforts of Bangladeshi freedom fighters and the Eastern Command of the Indian Army, whose combined operations led to the defeat of Pakistani forces and the birth of an independent Bangladesh in 1971.

The Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata is organising a host of programmes to mark the occasion, including morning flag hoisting, discussion sessions, and special prayers. A cultural evening has also been scheduled to celebrate Bangladesh’s heritage and commemorate the nation’s hard-won freedom.

Ahead of the main events, the delegation met with the Governor of West Bengal, C.V. Anand Bose, on Monday morning to exchange greetings and reaffirm the historic bonds between the two nations.
