Bangladeshi Soldier Killed During Anti-Trafficking Operation in Teknaf

A Bangladeshi soldier was killed during a fierce gunfight between joint security forces and an armed human trafficking gang in the dense hills of Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, on Thursday afternoon. The victim, Private Md Titas Sheikh, aged 27, sustained fatal gunshot wounds while attempting to rescue dozens of hostages held captive in the remote terrain.

According to a press statement released by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), intelligence reports indicated that a heavily armed human trafficking syndicate comprising 15 to 16 operatives was holding approximately 120 individuals captive in the deep forest of Rongikhali under Teknaf upazila. The hostages included both Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingya refugees. In response, a joint operational task force was assembled, combining elements from the 10 Infantry Division of the Bangladesh Army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and local police units.

The joint task force arrived at the targeted location at approximately 5:00 pm. Sensing the arrival of security personnel, the armed traffickers initiated unprovoked, indiscriminate gunfire towards the joint forces. Security officers returned fire in self-defence, resulting in a prolonged exchange of gunshots across the hilly terrain.

During the engagement, Private Titas Sheikh was struck in the left shoulder by a bullet, causing severe injury and critical blood loss. Comrades evacuated him from the immediate conflict zone and administered emergency first aid at a nearby medical facility. As his condition deteriorated, he was rushed to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Ramu for advanced treatment, where attending doctors pronounced him dead.

Following the intense firefight, joint forces conducted thorough search operations in the surrounding hills. Security teams apprehended five active members of the trafficking syndicate and rescued 57 hostages from captivity. At the scene, officers seized one pistol, one locally crafted firearm, and four rounds of live ammunition. In its official statement, the Bangladesh Army paid solemn tribute to the young soldier’s ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, expressing profound condolences to his bereaved family.
