Tragedy has struck a family in Mymensingh following the untimely death of a 21-year-old Bangladeshi expatriate, who was killed in a high-speed road accident in Saudi Arabia. The victim, Jahangir Mia, died on the spot after being struck by a racing car in the coastal city of Jeddah late on Saturday night.
Jahangir was the son of Shahjahan Mia, a Kuwait-based expatriate hailing from Palaikanda village in the Yashra Union of Gafargaon upazila, Mymensingh. The heartbreaking news of his passing was confirmed by the victim’s uncle, Zaydur Rahman, leaving his native village in deep mourning.
According to family members, Jahangir had relocated to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia just a year ago in pursuit of better economic prospects. He took up employment with a commercial company in Jeddah, where he lived and worked alongside other migrant workers. The fatal incident occurred around midnight local time on Saturday when Jahangir stepped out of his residential quarters to purchase everyday essential items from a nearby market. As he attempted to cross a road, a fast-moving racing car lost control and ploughed directly into him. The impact was so severe that Jahangir succumbed to his injuries before medical assistance could reach the scene.
Saudi law enforcement authorities arrived at the location shortly after being alerted by witnesses. Officers recovered the body from the street and transferred it to the morgue of a local government hospital in Jeddah, where it remains pending official inquests and consular procedures.
The sudden loss of such a young worker highlights the daily vulnerabilities faced by millions of Bangladeshi migrant laborers across the Middle East. Remittances sent home by non-resident workers like Jahangir and his father serve as a major pillar of Bangladesh’s economy, yet these individuals often encounter severe hazards abroad. Family members in Gafargaon are now appealing to the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, as well as the Bangladesh Consulate General in Jeddah, to expedite the administrative formalities so that Jahangir’s mortal remains can be repatriated to his ancestral home for burial.
