Bangladesh’s Reserves Climb to $30.46 Billion

Bangladesh’s gross foreign exchange reserves stood at $30.46 billion on 21 April, reflecting a marginal rise from $30.37 billion recorded earlier, according to officials of the central bank.

The latest figure was confirmed by Arif Hossain Khan, spokesperson and Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank, while briefing journalists. He noted that the adjustment in reserves reflects recent foreign exchange operations carried out in the domestic market.

Officials said that Bangladesh Bank purchased more than $180 million from commercial banks over the period from last week to Monday of the current week. These purchases contributed directly to the increase in reserves by adding to the central bank’s foreign currency stock.

A senior official of the central bank stated that the dollar-buying activity was linked to an upcoming settlement obligation with the Asian Clearing Union, scheduled for next month. The ACU serves as a regional mechanism through which member countries settle payments arising from intra-regional trade, typically on a bi-monthly basis. Such settlements often require significant outflows of foreign exchange from participating central banks.

In anticipation of this obligation, Bangladesh Bank increased its purchases of US dollars from commercial banks to ensure adequate liquidity. Central banks commonly use such market operations to manage reserve levels ahead of scheduled external payments and to maintain stability in the foreign exchange market.

Foreign exchange reserves are widely regarded as a key indicator of a country’s external sector stability, as they provide the capacity to finance imports, meet external debt obligations, and support confidence in the currency market. Movements in reserves are influenced by multiple factors, including export earnings, remittance inflows, and official foreign exchange operations.

The latest data indicates that the increase in reserves was primarily driven by targeted dollar acquisitions rather than large external inflows during the period under review.
