BAU Issues Show-Cause Notices to 42 Students Over Campus Violence

MYMENSINGH — Authorities at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) have issued formal show-cause notices to 42 students across four residential halls following a series of violent clashes, physical assaults, and widespread property damage that recently rocked the campus.

The action was officially confirmed on Sunday, 9 August, by the university’s Proctor, Professor Dr Md Abdul Alim. According to the administration, the implicated students must submit written explanations in their defense by 11 August.

Proctor Dr Abdul Alim stated that the preliminary show-cause notices were served based on written complaints lodged by the respective hall administrations and direct observations made by members of the proctorial body who were present at the scenes of the altercations. He emphasised that those issued with notices are being given a fair opportunity to present their case, while two separate inquiry committees continue to investigate the incidents.

Unravelling the Chain of Hall Conflicts

The disciplinary action stems from a volatile sequence of confrontations that unfolded over two weeks, transforming residential quarters into arenas of unrest. The first outbreak of violence occurred on 23 and 24 July, when personal disputes escalated into full-scale clashes between residents of Ashraful Haq Hall and Shahid Shamsul Haq Hall. At least 13 individuals sustained injuries during the initial skirmishes, which involved aggressive chases and stone-pelting between the opposing student factions.

Tensions flared again on 1 August, sparked by heated arguments inside a social media messaging group. The digital dispute quickly spilled into the real world, provoking violent clashes between students residing in Suhrawardy Hall and Bhashani Hall, leaving five more individuals injured. The situation deteriorated further on the night of 2 August, when students from all four residential halls became entangled in widespread, multi-front confrontations across the campus.

Severe Structural Damage and Administrative Oversight

The repeated altercations caused significant destruction across university property. Assailants hurled bricks and heavy stones, shattering window panes, wrecking main hall gates, destroying surveillance cameras, and smashing outdoor lighting fixtures.

In response to the unprecedented disruption, the BAU administration constituted two high-level investigation committees tasked with identifying the perpetrators and unearthing the underlying causes of the sustained hostilities.

Addressing concerns over fairness, Proctor Dr Alim reassured the campus community that no innocent student would face punitive measures. “If any student who received a show-cause notice is proven innocent, no disciplinary action will be taken against them,” he clarified. He added that the inquiry committees have yet to submit their final findings to the central administration. Once the committee reports and student responses are thoroughly evaluated, the university authority will proceed with strict disciplinary measures against those found guilty, in full accordance with institutional rules and regulations.
