Begumganj Suspect Arrested with Yaba

A man long listed as a wanted accused in multiple serious criminal cases has been arrested in Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila with a consignment of illegal narcotics, according to district police officials.

The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Delwar Hossain, was detained by the District Detective Branch (DB) of police on Saturday night from Rajganj Union. Law enforcement officers confirmed that he was apprehended in possession of 100 pieces of yaba tablets during a targeted operation based on confidential intelligence.

Authorities stated that Delwar Hossain, son of the late Sayedul Haque from Eklashpur Union in Begumganj, is considered a known figure in local criminal networks. He has been implicated in a series of serious criminal cases filed at Begumganj Police Station, including charges related to arms possession, murder, rape, and explosives-related offences. In total, he is listed as an accused in at least six separate cases.

Police reports indicate that the arrest took place in front of a tea stall in the Aladinagar Masud Mia area, where officers conducted a search operation following intelligence input. During the search, the yaba tablets were recovered from his possession, leading to his immediate detention on the spot.

Following the arrest, law enforcement officials confirmed that a fresh case under the Narcotics Control Act is in the process of being filed against him. He is currently in police custody and is expected to be produced before a court soon for further legal proceedings.

The incident has drawn renewed attention due to Delwar Hossain’s alleged involvement in earlier high-profile criminal activity in the region. He is reportedly associated with a group that came under national scrutiny in 2020 after a widely circulated video emerged showing the brutalisation of a woman in Begumganj. That incident sparked widespread outrage across Bangladesh and led to multiple arrests at the time, including Delwar Hossain himself.

Police officials have reiterated their commitment to continuing operations against organised criminal groups and drug networks operating in the district.
