Large catches of catla and rohu fish from the Padma River have recently been sold at high prices at the Daulatdia Ferry Ghat in Rajbari District. Two sizeable fish—one catla weighing nearly 30 kilogrammes and one rohu weighing around 14 kilogrammes—were sold on Monday morning, continuing a recent trend of sizeable freshwater fish being caught in the river.
According to local sources, the catla fish weighed 29.8 kilogrammes and the rohu weighed 13.7 kilogrammes. Both fish were brought to the market after being caught at the mouth of the Padma River by local fishermen operating from nearby riverine areas.
The catla was caught by fisherman Jamir Haldar from the Barat Antar Mor area under Rajbari Sadar Upazila. He went fishing late on Sunday night, using nets and a boat. At around 4:00 am on Monday, while casting his net at Kushahata near the river mouth, he felt a strong pull indicating a large catch. After hauling the net onto his boat, he found the large catla fish. He then transported it to Rezaul Islam Mondal’s fish depot near the ferry terminal for sale.
At a similar time, fisherman Tara Mondal from Bahir Char in Daulatdia also caught a large rohu fish from the same river mouth area. He too brought his catch to the same fish depot for auction.
Both fish were later auctioned at the fish market operated by Rezaul Islam Mondal. The highest bidder, local trader Chandu Molla, purchased both fish before reselling them to buyers from outside the district.

Fish trader Chandu Molla noted that the catla was one of the largest seen this season, although a 33-kilogram fish had been recorded in the previous year. He stated that the catla was initially purchased at 2,250 Bangladeshi taka per kilogram and later sold at a profit to a buyer from Dhaka who had been specifically seeking a large catla.
The rohu fish was initially bought at approximately 3,100 taka per kilogram and later resold at 3,200 taka per kilogram to a buyer from Madaripur, who arranged for it to be transported for family consumption.
Both transactions reflect continued demand for large freshwater fish sourced from the Padma River system, particularly at landing points such as Daulatdia Ferry Ghat, which serves as a key trading hub for riverine catches.
