BMD Issues Safety Guidelines Following Thunderstorm Warnings

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a formal warning to the public following forecasts of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across various regions of the country. In a statement released on Wednesday, 29 April, the department urged citizens to remain vigilant and take immediate precautionary measures to mitigate the risks associated with lightning strikes, which have become a significant natural hazard in the region.

Core Safety Protocols and the “30-Minute Rule”

The BMD emphasized that the presence of dense, dark clouds or the sound of thunder serves as a primary warning sign. The department’s official advisory slogan, “Hear the thunder, head indoors,” underscores the necessity of seeking immediate shelter. According to meteorological experts, the threat of lightning persists even after the rain appears to have stopped. Consequently, the BMD has advised the public to remain in a safe, enclosed location for at least 30 minutes after the final clap of thunder is heard.

Specific Instructions for Indoor and Outdoor Safety

The advisory categorises safety measures into specific environments to ensure comprehensive protection for all citizens:

1. Residential Precautions:

While indoors, individuals must ensure that all doors and windows are securely fastened. The department strictly advises against touching metal objects, including window grilles, railings, or any metallic household fixtures. Furthermore, the public is cautioned against venturing into courtyards to collect hailstones or perform chores during a storm.

2. Outdoor and Recreational Restrictions:

The BMD highlighted that open fields represent high-risk zones. Activities such as playing football, cricket, or flying kites must be suspended immediately upon the onset of a storm. Individuals are also instructed to avoid gathering in large groups. Contrary to some common myths, the department clarified that lying flat on the ground does not provide safety and should be avoided.

3. Environmental Hazards:

Seeking shelter under tall trees, near electric poles, or beneath metallic sheds is classified as extremely dangerous, as these structures frequently attract lightning strikes. Similarly, those engaged in fishing or any activities in rivers, hailstorms, or wetlands are directed to return to land and seek solid shelter immediately.

Summary of Recommended Actions

The following table outlines the critical safety directives provided by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department:

Category Recommended Actions (DOs) Prohibited Actions (DON’Ts)
Shelter Selection Seek refuge in a concrete or permanent building. Stand under trees or isolated metallic sheds.
Indoor Safety Close windows; unplug electrical appliances. Touch metal grilles or use corded phones.
Outdoor Safety Move to low-lying areas if no shelter is near. Lie flat on the ground or stand in open fields.
Water Bodies Stay away from ponds, rivers, and lakes. Engage in fishing or bathing during storms.
Post-Storm Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder. Exit shelter immediately after rain stops.

Technical Context of the Warning

The BMD’s warning comes amid a period of increased atmospheric instability. Lightning in Bangladesh is most prevalent during the pre-monsoon (March–May) and monsoon seasons. The department reiterated that lightning-related fatalities are largely preventable through the strict adherence to these verified safety protocols. Touching electrical lines, metallic objects, or any machinery connected to a power source during a storm significantly increases the risk of electrocution. All family members, particularly children, should be kept indoors until the threat has completely subsided.
