Bribery Bid Over Foreign Travel Foiled

A corruption attempt involving a district police chief in Bangladesh has led to the arrest of two individuals, including a woman and a local businessman, after they allegedly tried to offer a bribe to stop a man from travelling abroad.

The incident took place on Thursday (30 April) at Kulaura Police Station in Moulvibazar district, where routine official activity coincided with a high-level inspection by senior police officials. According to police sources, the accused were detained on the spot while attempting to pass money to the Superintendent of Police (SP).

The arrested individuals have been identified as Moinul Islam Chowdhury Samad, a businessman from Bhabanipur village under Raoutgaon Union in Kulaura upazila, and Jesmin Akhtar, a resident of Abdulpur village in the same union. Jesmin is the former wife of a local man, Mahatab Mia, with whom she is reportedly engaged in ongoing legal disputes following their separation.

Police say Jesmin had previously accused her ex-husband of serious allegations, including claims that he had harassed her daughter—claims that remain under judicial scrutiny. Recently, upon learning that her former husband intended to travel abroad, she allegedly sought to obstruct his departure through unlawful means.

In pursuit of this objective, Jesmin arrived at the police station accompanied by businessman Samad, carrying a sum of money intended to influence official intervention. During the encounter, Samad allegedly took advantage of the situation and discreetly removed 160,000 Bangladeshi taka from the original 200,000 taka brought for the purpose, leaving only 40,000 taka to be presented to the police chief.

The situation unfolded during a biannual inspection conducted by the Deputy Inspector General of the Sylhet Range, with senior officers including the Moulvibazar SP and other high-ranking officials present. When the remaining cash was presented to the Superintendent of Police, he immediately detected the irregularity and ordered both individuals to be detained.

Jesmin Akhtar Private individual Abdulpur, Raoutgaon Union Attempting to influence police to stop ex-husband’s travel

Kulaura Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge confirmed that a case has been filed against the duo under relevant sections of the law. He added that they would be produced before the court following completion of legal procedures.

Superintendent of Police Mohammad Billal Hossain stated that Jesmin had been in contact with him for several days seeking a meeting regarding her personal dispute. She was advised to meet at the police station, where the alleged bribery attempt subsequently took place. He further confirmed that both suspects were detained immediately after the money was discovered and legal action was initiated.

Authorities have described the incident as a clear attempt to interfere with official duties through illegal financial inducement, and investigations are ongoing.
