Former Bangladesh captain and world-renowned all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has indicated that he is hopeful of returning to Bangladesh by the end of 2026, depending on the resolution of ongoing legal and administrative complications surrounding him.
Speaking recently at a jersey launch event in Mumbai for the “EU T20 Belgium 2026”, Shakib addressed his prolonged absence from home and expressed cautious optimism about his future return. He has been living in the United States with his family since political developments in Bangladesh in August 2024 significantly altered his circumstances.
Following the political shift after 5 August 2024, Shakib has remained outside the country. During the tenure of the previous government, he served as a Member of Parliament for the Magura-2 constituency. However, subsequent legal cases, including allegations related to a murder case, created serious complications that have prevented his return.
Despite the uncertainty, Shakib struck a hopeful tone in his interview with Indian media outlet Sportstar, stating that he believes matters could be resolved within the year.
He said he is confident that he will eventually return to Bangladesh, emphasising that the only question is how quickly the situation can be resolved. He added that while he does not know the exact mechanism or timeline, he remains optimistic that progress will be made by the end of the year.
Earlier this year, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) reportedly explored avenues to facilitate his return. Under the leadership of Aminul Islam Bulbul at the time, the board collected legal documentation from Shakib’s representatives and forwarded them to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for review. There were even informal discussions suggesting a possible return during a Pakistan series, though that plan ultimately did not materialise.
Shakib, however, has expressed frustration that despite public statements of support, concrete steps have been limited. He suggested that while goodwill may exist, it has not translated into effective action.
The current BCB ad-hoc committee chairman, Tamim Iqbal, has recently taken a more conciliatory stance. Speaking at a press briefing in Mirpur, he indicated that the board’s doors remain open for Shakib, as well as other senior players facing similar circumstances. He also noted that legal matters are being handled at government level, and any easing of restrictions would be welcomed by the cricket board.
Shakib last represented Bangladesh in international cricket in October 2024, during a Test match against India in Kanpur. Since then, he has not featured in national colours, although he has previously expressed a strong desire to retire from international cricket on home soil in front of local supporters.
