A man and his son have been arrested in connection with the alleged killing of a man over a long-standing family dispute involving land and crop-sharing in Saturia, Manikganj.
The suspects, identified as Abul Hossain, 55, and his son Mohammad Sohel, 28, were arrested by Special Response Battalion (SRB)-4 during a raid in the Kachpur area of Sonargaon, Narayanganj, on Sunday night, 11 October.
According to SRB-4, the deceased, Nur Hossain, had been involved in a long-running dispute over land with his younger brother, Abul Hossain, and his nephews. The disagreement reportedly centred on land ownership and the division of agricultural produce.
The incident took place on the morning of 10 October, when Nur Hossain and his family members went to their agricultural land to harvest crops. Abul Hossain and his son Sohel allegedly arrived at the site and verbally abused them.
The situation escalated when Nur Hossain protested against the alleged abuse. According to the allegations, Abul Hossain and Sohel then attacked Nur Hossain and his family members.
During the assault, Nur Hossain was allegedly struck several times on the head with bamboo sticks. He sustained serious injuries and collapsed to the ground. When his relatives tried to protect him, they were also attacked. His sister, daughter and son-in-law were reportedly beaten and seriously injured.
Local residents and family members rescued Nur Hossain and took him to Manikganj 250-bed General Hospital for treatment. As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care. However, doctors declared him dead after he arrived at the hospital.
Following the incident, Nur Hossain’s daughter filed a murder case with Saturia Police Station, prompting efforts to identify and arrest those accused in the case.
SRB-4 said a team began a covert investigation at the scene shortly after the alleged killing. Investigators also used intelligence information and technological resources to trace the suspects.
As part of the investigation, the team gathered information about their whereabouts in Kachpur, under Sonargaon Police Station in Narayanganj. The two suspects were subsequently arrested during a raid in the area on Sunday night.
SRB-4 said the arrested men were handed over to the relevant police station for further legal proceedings.
The incident highlights how a long-standing family dispute over land and agricultural produce allegedly escalated into a fatal confrontation. Further investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the attack and establish the individual roles of those accused.
The allegations against the arrested men have yet to be established through the legal process.
