A motorcyclist was killed and another person was seriously injured after a passenger bus collided with their motorcycle in Gournadi upazila of Barishal on Friday morning.
The accident occurred at around 10.30am on the Dhaka-Barishal highway in the South Bijoypur area, according to local sources. The deceased was identified as Arafat Rahman Babu, 32, a resident of Ashokathi village in Gournadi.
According to eyewitnesses, a Tajbi Paribahan passenger bus travelling from Dhaka towards Kuakata collided with a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. The impact threw the motorcycle’s rider and passenger onto the road, leaving both of them injured.
Local people rushed to the scene shortly after the collision and rescued the two injured men. They were taken to Gournadi Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Doctors there declared Arafat Rahman Babu dead after assessing his condition.
The other injured person, identified as Asadul, was in a critical condition and was subsequently referred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for better treatment.
The accident caused concern among people in the area as it took place on the Dhaka-Barishal highway, a major road connecting the capital with Barishal and other destinations in the southern region. The route carries a large number of passenger buses, private vehicles, motorcycles and other transport throughout the day. Collisions involving motorcycles and larger vehicles can result in severe injuries because riders have considerably less physical protection in the event of a crash.
Police from Gournadi Highway Police Station visited the scene after being informed of the accident. The bus and motorcycle involved in the collision have both been taken into police custody.
Gournadi Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mohsin Hossain confirmed that the two vehicles had been detained. He said further legal action in connection with the accident was under way.
The exact circumstances leading to the collision, including how the two vehicles came into contact on the highway, will be addressed through the ongoing legal process. Police action following such crashes generally includes securing the vehicles involved and documenting the circumstances of the incident as part of the subsequent proceedings.
