A serious road accident in Gobindaganj Upazila of Gaibandha District has left a bus driver with a severed leg and injured four passengers after a passenger bus collided with a stationary cement-laden truck.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning (5 May) at around 7:30am in the Panta Para area of Gobindaganj municipal town. According to officials from the fire service and highway police, a Dhaka-bound passenger bus of Saikat Paribahan, which was en route to Gaibandha, struck the rear of a parked truck loaded with cement.
Gobindaganj Upazila in Gaibandha District is a busy transport route where heavy vehicles frequently pass through the municipal corridor, including the Panta Para area where the collision occurred.
The impact caused severe damage to the front portion of the bus. The driver, Shanto Mia (26), son of Lutfar Rahman of Kupatola village in Gaibandha Sadar Upazila, became trapped inside the wreckage. His right leg was severed in the collision, while his left leg sustained a serious fracture and was reported to be nearly amputated.
Four passengers were also injured in the crash. Local residents and emergency responders later rescued the driver from the damaged vehicle and transported him to Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently referred to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Fire service officials confirmed that the severed limb was recovered from the scene shortly after the incident. Masud Rana, Station Officer of Gobindaganj Fire Service Station, stated that the bus had struck the stationary truck from behind, resulting in extensive damage and multiple casualties. He also noted that preliminary information suggested the driver may have been drowsy at the time of the collision, although this could not be independently verified at the scene.
Highway police also provided details on the incident. Officer-in-Charge Nasir Uddin stated that the driver had reportedly admitted to feeling sleepy while driving. Following the crash, the bus was seized by police for further investigation. Injured passengers who sustained minor injuries received initial treatment and were later discharged.
