Seventeen-year-old midfielder Cavan Sullivan has written his name into the record books by becoming the youngest Player of the Month in Major League Soccer (MLS) history. The Philadelphia Union starlet, who turned 17 just two days prior to the announcement, was officially named the recipient of the award for September following an extraordinary run of individual form.
By claiming the accolade, the talented American footballer of Bangladeshi descent surpassed the previous record set by Orlando City forward Daryl Dike in August 2020, who won the award at the age of 20 years and 98 days.
Sullivan was the primary catalyst behind Philadelphia Union’s flawless September, during which the club secured victories in all five of their league fixtures. Across those five matches, the young midfielder directly contributed to nine goals, scoring four times and providing five assists—a tally that placed him at the top of the entire league for overall goal contributions in September. His five assists made him the joint-highest assist provider for the month, while his four goals placed him joint-third among all scorers.
His exceptional September performance reflects a broader trend of consistent excellence throughout the campaign. Sullivan has produced a goal or an assist in eight consecutive matches, marking the longest continuous goal-contribution streak by any teenager in MLS history. Over the course of the season, he has featured in 24 matches, starting 17 of them and clocking 1,450 minutes on the pitch. With seven goals and 12 assists to his name, his 19 total goal contributions put him second on the all-time list for a teenager in a single MLS season, trailing only Alphonso Davies, who registered 20 contributions in 2018.
This milestone is the latest in a series of record-breaking achievements for the Philadelphia academy graduate. Sullivan made history on 17 July 2024 when he made his senior MLS debut against New England Revolution at just 14 years and 293 days old, making him the youngest player ever to feature in North American professional team sports. Additionally, he became the first player to progress through MLS NEXT, advance to MLS NEXT Pro, establish himself in the first team, and ultimately earn the MLS Player of the Month award.
His rapid ascent extended to the international stage last month when he earned his senior debut for the United States men’s national team at the age of 16 years and 363 days, making him the fourth-youngest debutant in US national team history.
