Charli XCX has shared a short black-and-white studio video offering a glimpse into the making of a new track titled Rock Music, which is part of her forthcoming studio album.
The footage, filmed in October, shows Charli XCX working in a Paris studio with producer A. G. Cook and Finn Keane, both of whom also contributed to her 2024 album Brat. In the clip, she is seen discussing the idea behind the track, stating: “It would be cool if we could have a song that was called ‘Rock Music’,” before the group experiment with early production ideas.
The video also briefly displays an iPhone Notes page containing draft lyrics written by Charli XCX. The text reads: “Me and my friends / We go out / We take pictures together / We sometimes cry / We kiss each other incestous vibes.” In the caption accompanying the post, she clarifies the concept of the track, writing: “a video of me making a song called ‘rock music’ that is not actually rock music which is funny because i never said i was making a rock album. love you xx”.
The teaser follows confirmation that she has been completing work on her next album. In a Vogue interview, Charli XCX said: “I think the dance floor is dead, so now we’re making rock music.” She also addressed expectations around her next release, stating she did not want to repeat the style of Brat: “If I’d made another album that felt more dance-leaning, it would have felt really hard, really sad. What’s interesting for me is to bend the possibilities of what my perspective on that could be.”
Her 2024 album Brat was widely noted for its cultural impact, including the emergence of the “Brat Summer” phenomenon, and further established her profile as a global pop artist. Since its release, Charli XCX has expanded her creative output across music, film, and television.
