Today marks the anniversary of ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence–powered chatbot that has revolutionised the technology world. Launched on 30 November 2022, ChatGPT reached 100 million users within just two months. Today, people of all ages and professions use it regularly, and in three years it has achieved a milestone of over 800 million active weekly users.

Since its release by OpenAI, ChatGPT has ushered in a new era in technology, society and the economy. It is not just a chatbot; it is a groundbreaking tool that brings artificial intelligence within the reach of ordinary people. Despite other organisations launching their own AI chatbots, ChatGPT remains at the top in terms of popularity.

ChatGPT is built on a vast GPT architecture, developed using Large Language Model (LLM) technology. It can conduct human-like conversations in natural language, write code, answer complex questions, and produce creative content. Due to its use in daily tasks, ChatGPT currently ranks as the fifth most visited website globally.

It is capable of providing rapid and accurate responses to any message and can independently generate messages, articles, or poetry. Its precise language and choice of words often make its output indistinguishable from human writing. Besides serving as a virtual tutor for students, ChatGPT plays an important role in producing creative content and quickly analysing information.

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, was founded on 8 December 2015 with the mission of using artificial intelligence for the welfare of humanity. The organisation was established by 11 entrepreneurs, including Greg Brockman (current President), Sam Altman (current CEO), and Elon Musk (founder of PayPal, Tesla and SpaceX). Elon Musk later left the company, while Altman remained, leading to the creation of ChatGPT.

Based in San Francisco, OpenAI initially operated as a non-profit organisation. Last October, the company’s valuation was set at 500 billion dollars. Microsoft owns 27 percent of OpenAI shares, valued at approximately 135 billion dollars.
