Chelsea’s aspirations for UEFA Champions League qualification have mathematically concluded following a 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest. This result marks a historic low for the West London club, as they have now endured six consecutive losses in the Premier League. The defeat leaves the Blues in ninth position, unable to bridge the gap to the top five spots required for elite European qualification.
The fixture began disastrously for the visitors, who conceded within the opening 98 seconds. Nottingham Forest took the lead through Taiwo Awoniyi, who converted a header following a precise cross from Dylan Bakwa. Despite Forest making eight changes to their starting line-up to rest key players for an upcoming Europa League semi-final, Chelsea’s defensive unit struggled to maintain cohesion against the rotated side.
Chelsea attempted to respond in the 10th minute when Enzo Fernández struck a powerful shot, but the effort rebounded off the post. The situation worsened shortly after when Malo Gusto committed a foul on Awoniyi inside the penalty area. Igor Jesus successfully converted the resulting penalty, doubling the hosts’ lead within the first 15 minutes of play.
A significant delay occurred just before the interval due to a collision between Jesse Derry and Zach Abbott. The medical emergency resulted in a 12-minute stoppage, and Derry, making his professional debut, was forced to leave the pitch on a stretcher. Following the restart, Chelsea were awarded a penalty, but Cole Palmer’s attempt was saved by Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels, sending the teams into half-time at 2-0.
The second half saw no reprieve for the Blues. Morgan Gibbs-White provided a penetrating pass through the Chelsea defence to find Awoniyi, who scored his second goal of the match to make it 3-0. Although João Pedro had a goal disallowed by VAR earlier, he managed to score a consolation goal in stoppage time with a technical overhead kick. While this strike ended Chelsea’s nine-hour goal drought, it had no impact on the final outcome.
