A deeply disturbing incident in Alfadanga Upazila under Faridpur District has left a 10-year-old madrasa student seriously injured after he was allegedly bound with a cattle rope and subjected to violent treatment.
The victim, identified as Mohammad Tamim Biswas, a student of the Nazera section at a local madrasa and orphanage, was injured on Thursday evening (11 June) at around 5:00 pm. The incident reportedly took place on the premises of the Joint Markazul Quran Madrasa and Orphanage in the Nawapara Kuchiyagram area.
According to local accounts and the victim’s statement, a local man allegedly tied a rope around the child’s neck and waist and then used it to control and chase a cow inside the madrasa compound. The animal had reportedly been grazing on saplings planted within the institution’s grounds, which triggered the confrontation.
The accused has been identified as Kausar Mridha, son of Motaher Mridha. It is alleged that he had tied the cow within the madrasa premises. When the animal began damaging young plants, the child attempted to relocate the tethering post. This action reportedly angered the accused, leading to the violent response.
Tamim stated that once the cow began running, he was dragged along due to the rope tied around him. He was eventually thrown against a young tree and fell to the ground, sustaining injuries to his neck, face, and multiple parts of his body. The rope reportedly caused deep abrasions around his neck, raising serious concerns about potential life-threatening harm.
Tamim, who is an orphan and resides at the madrasa following the death of his father, is currently receiving medical treatment. Locals described the incident as “inhumane” and “shocking,” noting that the child could easily have been killed given the force involved.
A brief local arbitration meeting was held on Friday (12 June), during which the accused was fined 20,000 Bangladeshi Taka. However, many residents have rejected the settlement, calling it inadequate and one-sided. They have demanded a proper legal investigation and criminal proceedings instead of informal mediation.
Efforts to obtain a statement from the accused were unsuccessful, as he was not available for comment.
The Officer-in-Charge of Fakir Taijul Rahman stated that no formal written complaint had yet been received. He added that police had been instructed to visit the complainant’s side and bring the matter to the station for further inquiry, with an expected resolution later the same day.
