A 10-year-old girl has allegedly been raped in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria, prompting her mother to file a case with the local police. The child is receiving medical treatment at Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital, while police are making efforts to arrest the accused, identified as Yasin Mia, the owner of a local furniture shop.
According to the case details, the girl is a Year Five pupil at a government primary school in the area.
The girl’s family alleged that the incident took place on Friday morning, when she went to a market in her village to buy cooking oil. While returning home, she was allegedly taken into a furniture shop beside the road, where Yasin Mia is accused of sexually assaulting her.
The family further alleged that the accused threatened to kill the child if she told anyone about the incident. He reportedly gave her a 20-taka banknote before sending her home.
After returning home, the girl began crying, prompting her family to investigate what had happened. They reportedly found her bleeding and took her to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital for treatment later that day. She remains under medical care.
Officer-in-Charge Ali Mohammad Rashed of Kasba Police Station confirmed that a case had been filed in connection with the allegations. He said the girl’s mother lodged the complaint on Sunday morning and that police were making concerted efforts to arrest Yasin Mia.
The incident has also prompted allegations of an attempt to settle the matter through informal village arbitration rather than the formal legal process.
Zainal Abedin, a social worker from a neighbouring village, claimed that some local residents had attempted to resolve the matter informally, potentially preventing it from proceeding through the legal system. According to him, several young residents opposed the proposed settlement and demanded that the allegations be addressed through the proper legal process. Their objections led to the arbitration effort being abandoned, he said.
The allegations have highlighted concerns about how cases involving sexual violence against children are handled at the local level. Such cases require careful investigation, appropriate medical attention and measures to protect the child from intimidation or further distress. Ensuring that complaints are dealt with through lawful procedures is also essential to establishing the facts and determining accountability.
Protecting the identity and privacy of child victims is particularly important. Unnecessary disclosure of personal details can expose children to additional emotional distress and social pressure. Medical records, witness accounts and other relevant evidence may play an important role in the investigation.
The allegations against Yasin Mia have not yet been established in court. Police have said they are working to arrest him, and the investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident. The child’s recovery and the pursuit of justice through the legal system remain central concerns as the case proceeds.
