City Bank recorded a 162 per cent increase in net profit in the first quarter of the current year compared with the same period in 2025, according to a press release issued on Thursday.
The bank’s post-tax profit reached Tk 241 crore during the quarter, up from Tk 92 crore a year earlier. Earnings per share (EPS) also rose significantly, increasing from Tk 0.6 in the first quarter of 2025 to Tk 1.6 in the corresponding period this year.
The bank stated that the strong performance was primarily driven by growth in its core banking income. Interest income from loans rose by 14 per cent, increasing from Tk 1,143 crore to Tk 1,306 crore. This reflects higher earnings from lending activities over the period under review.
Investment income also showed notable growth. It increased from Tk 603 crore to Tk 1,014 crore in the first quarter, accounting for 32 per cent of the bank’s total operating income. This indicates a significant contribution from investment-related earnings alongside traditional lending income.
The key financial indicators are summarised below:
| Indicator | Q1 Current Year | Q1 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net Profit (Tk crore) | 241 | 92 | +162% |
| Earnings Per Share (Tk) | 1.6 | 0.6 | — |
| Interest Income from Loans (Tk cr) | 1,306 | 1,143 | +14% |
| Investment Income (Tk crore) | 1,014 | 603 | — |
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Masrur Arefin commented on the results, stating that while the rise in profit was encouraging, the slowdown in loan growth during the first quarter was a matter of concern.
“I am as pleased with the rate of profit growth as I am concerned about the sharp decline in loan growth in the first quarter. The direction in which loan growth in this sector is heading is a matter of real concern,” he said.
The first-quarter performance highlights increased income from both lending and investment segments, although the bank’s management has flagged weaker loan growth as a potential challenge going forward.
