Clashes Erupt Between Garment Workers and Police in Ashulia

Clashes broke out between garment workers and police in Ashulia on Tuesday morning as a workers’ protest escalated into stone-throwing and a series of chases. Police fired tear gas and sound grenades to disperse the demonstrators, while water cannons were kept on standby at key locations to prevent further unrest.

The incident took place from the morning of 3 November in the Narsinghpur area along the Abdullahpur–Baipail road, disrupting traffic and causing concern among local residents and commuters.

According to police and local sources, workers from several garment factories in Jamgora, Narsinghpur and Nischintapur began gathering outside the main entrance of Sharmin Group shortly after 8 am. Workers from Ha-Meem Group and several nearby factories also joined the gathering, gradually increasing the size of the protest.

The demonstration later intensified when workers blocked the road and set fire to plastic materials at a site associated with the Elevated Expressway project. The road blockade created disruption along an important route connecting different parts of the industrial area.

Police subsequently moved to disperse the demonstrators and restore normal traffic movement. However, the situation deteriorated as clashes developed between the two sides. Some workers threw bricks and stones towards police personnel, prompting officers to use tear gas and sound grenades to bring the situation under control.

The use of sound grenades and tear gas added to the tension in the area, while the possibility of further confrontation prompted security personnel to remain on alert. Water cannons were positioned at several strategic points as a precautionary measure.

Abu Taleb, a sub-inspector at Ashulia Police Station, said workers had been throwing bricks and stones since the morning. Police subsequently dispersed the demonstrators, he added.

The confrontation also affected traffic along the Abdullahpur–Baipail road, where movement was temporarily disrupted. Commuters travelling through the area faced difficulties, while the clashes caused alarm among pedestrians, nearby residents and people working in surrounding establishments.

Additional police personnel, members of the Industrial Police and joint security forces were deployed at several key intersections across the industrial zone to maintain order and prevent the unrest from spreading.

Ashulia is one of Bangladesh’s major garment manufacturing hubs, with a large concentration of factories and thousands of workers employed across the area. Industrial unrest in locations such as Jamgora, Narsinghpur and Nischintapur can quickly affect road transport and factory operations, making the management of labour-related protests particularly important for both workers and local communities.

The specific demands behind Tuesday’s demonstration were not immediately detailed in the available information. There was also no immediate confirmation of casualties or the extent of any property damage.

Security personnel remained deployed across the area as efforts continued to contain the situation and restore normal conditions along the busy industrial route.
