A tragic road accident in Galachipa upazila of Patuakhali has claimed the life of a local contractor, while his close friend remains in critical condition receiving advanced medical treatment in Dhaka.
The deceased has been identified as Mizanur Rahman Mizu, a resident of the C & B Road area in Patuakhali town and son of Md. Rafiq Hawlader. He worked professionally as a contractor and was known locally for his involvement in construction-related projects. His companion, Md. Sagar Mridha, son of A. Latif Mridha from the same locality, sustained severe injuries and is currently undergoing specialised treatment in the capital.
According to family members and local sources, the incident occurred between the afternoon and late evening on Saturday (23 May) in the North Char Khali area under Sadar Union of Galachipa upazila. On the day of the accident, the two friends had set out from Patuakhali town to attend the funeral prayer of Sagar Mridha’s brother-in-law in Char Khali village.
At approximately 5:30 pm, when their vehicle—reported to be a motorcycle or similar two-wheeled transport—reached the North Char Khali stretch of road, it collided with a goods-laden lorry. The impact was severe, throwing both riders onto the roadside and leaving them critically injured.
Locals rushed to the scene shortly after the crash and transported the injured to Galachipa Upazila Health Complex. Given the seriousness of their condition, both were later referred to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for advanced care. Despite medical efforts, Mizanur Rahman Mizu succumbed to his injuries at around 11:30 pm on Saturday night.
Sagar Mridha’s condition deteriorated further, prompting an emergency transfer to Dhaka, where he is currently under the supervision of specialist physicians. His family reports that he remains in a critical but stable condition.
The sudden death of Mizu has cast a pall of grief over the local community. Neighbours and relatives have described him as a hardworking and responsible individual whose untimely passing has left his family devastated.
Police from Galachipa Police Station’s investigation unit confirmed awareness of the incident. Officials stated that since the victim died at Barishal Medical College Hospital and the matter involves inter-district jurisdiction, immediate procedural steps are limited. However, they added that a formal legal case will be initiated if the family submits a written complaint.
