Police have recovered the bodies of a married couple from their home in Mahadebpur upazila of Naogaon, with investigators suspecting that poisoning may have caused their deaths. The incident has prompted a police investigation, while the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy remain unclear pending forensic examination.
The deceased have been identified as Lokman Mondol, 55, and his wife Delowara Begum, 45, residents of Paharpur village under Sofapur Union in Mahadebpur upazila. Their bodies were recovered from their residence on Monday morning.
According to local residents, the couple had dinner together on Sunday night before retiring to bed as usual. At around 4:00 a.m. on Monday, their son, Muktar Hossain, alerted neighbours, who rushed to the house. They reportedly found both victims lying lifeless on a bed before informing the authorities.
The incident has sparked widespread concern in the local community, with residents expressing shock over the deaths. Some locals alleged that Muktar Hossain had been struggling with drug addiction and had also become involved in gambling through mobile applications. According to their claims, he had frequently demanded money from his parents to support those habits. They speculated that the couple may have been given a poisonous substance after refusing to provide him with money. These allegations, however, have not been confirmed by police and remain part of the ongoing investigation.
Mahadebpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Omar Faruk said officers recovered both bodies from the house and sent them to the Naogaon Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations. He stated that preliminary observations suggest the deaths may have resulted from poisoning, although investigators are awaiting forensic and autopsy findings before reaching any definitive conclusion.
Police have not officially named any suspect or disclosed whether anyone has been taken into custody. Investigators are collecting evidence, interviewing family members and neighbours, and examining the circumstances leading up to the couple’s deaths.
The post-mortem report is expected to play a crucial role in determining the precise cause of death and whether the incident was the result of accidental poisoning, suicide, or a criminal act. Authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation is underway.
The deaths have cast a shadow over the quiet rural community, where neighbours described the couple as familiar local residents. Police say further details will be released once forensic examinations and the ongoing investigation provide clearer answers.
