In a comprehensive security drive across the capital, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested 554 individuals over a 24-hour period. The coordinated operation, aimed at curbing criminal activities and maintaining public order, resulted in 30 new cases being filed across various police stations in the city.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Media and Public Relations) Niaz Mehedi confirmed the details of the law enforcement drive on Saturday, 29 August. The arrests were conducted by multiple divisions, including the crime, detective, and specialized counter-terrorism wings of the DMP.
The breakdown of arrests shows that the Mirpur Division recorded the highest number of apprehensions, securing 174 suspects. The Wari Division followed with 85 arrests, while the Uttara Division detained 61 individuals. The Motijheel Division reported 57 arrests, Tejgaon Division made 56, and the Gulshan Division took 47 suspects into custody. In addition, the Lalbagh Division arrested 32 individuals, the Ramna Division detained 31, and the specialized Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit and Detective Branch (DB) arrested seven and four suspects, respectively.
During the raids, police officers seized significant quantities of illegal narcotics and contraband. Seizures included 5,445 yaba pills, 31.2 kilograms of cannabis, and 20 bottles of illicit Escaf syrup. Beyond narcotics, law enforcement personnel recovered property suspected to be tied to criminal activities, including 21 mobile phones, eight credit and debit cards issued by various banks, 146 SIM cards from multiple telecommunication providers, and a private motor vehicle.
DMP officials emphasized that the routine drives across all police stations in the capital form part of a broader strategy to disrupt criminal networks and ensure public safety. Legal proceedings against all 554 arrested individuals are currently under way, with suspects being processed for court appearances.
