Ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) acting Commissioner, Md. Sarwar, has advised residents to avoid leaving cash, gold jewellery, and important documents unsecured at home. He recommended that such valuables be left with trusted relatives. For those who do not have family in Dhaka, the acting commissioner suggested that the police can safeguard these items at local police stations.
Speaking at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Sunday, Md. Sarwar outlined the security plans for a largely empty city during the holiday period and measures to ensure safe travel for returning residents.
Do not leave cash, gold, or important documents unattended.
If possible, leave valuables with relatives or neighbours.
Residents without relatives in Dhaka may deposit items at the nearest police station.
Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked before leaving.
Turn off or check electricity, gas, and water connections.
Maintain functional CCTV cameras and adequate lighting around the home.
Md. Sarwar emphasised that these precautions are part of a wider strategy to maintain law and order while the city experiences a temporary population dip.
| Area / Activity | Security Measures |
|---|---|
| City Patrols | Over 300 vehicles including motorcycles and cars conduct mobile patrols daily |
| Checkposts | More than 70 checkposts active at night across Dhaka |
| Residential & Commercial Areas | Foot patrols and special monitoring in sensitive locations |
| Transport Terminals | Four bus terminals, one launch terminal, and the central railway station under special surveillance |
| Markets & Shopping Areas | Nearly 1,000 police personnel deployed from morning to late night |
| Crime Prevention | Targeting pickpockets, snatchers, and illegal street parties |
| Road Safety | Mobile courts on Purbachal Expressway, Banani-Abdullahpur, and Gulshan areas to prevent racing and over-speeding |
The acting commissioner added that uniformed police, supported by detective units, would monitor passengers at bus, launch, and railway terminals to prevent harassment or overcharging. Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity and cooperate with police patrols.
With the city expected to be largely empty, Md. Sarwar reassured that the DMP has taken all necessary steps to maintain public safety and prevent crime during the festive period.
