Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested 484 people and filed 58 cases during a 24-hour enforcement operation across the capital, targeting various criminal activities and the possession of illegal substances.
The arrests were made in separate raids conducted in different police station areas of Dhaka, according to Niaz Mehedi, additional deputy commissioner of the Media and Public Relations Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. He disclosed the information on Tuesday, 11 August.
Police said various pieces of evidence and narcotic substances were recovered during the operation. The arrests were carried out as part of the DMP’s routine efforts to maintain public order and curb criminal activities across the city.
The Mirpur division recorded the highest number of arrests, with 124 people detained. The Wari division followed with 71 arrests, while the Motijheel division accounted for 56. Gulshan police division arrested 55 people, while Tejgaon and Uttara recorded 50 and 48 arrests respectively.
The Ramna division arrested 43 people, followed by Lalbagh with 33. The Detective Branch arrested three people, while the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit detained one person.
The operation also resulted in the recovery of a range of items, including narcotics and objects suspected to have been used or intended for unlawful activities. Police recovered 6.2 kilograms of cannabis, 6,956 yaba tablets and 30 bottles of Eskaf syrup, identified by police as a codeine-based intoxicant commonly associated with illicit drug use.
In addition, officers recovered one motorcycle, five mobile phones, two gas lighters, six pieces of foil paper and Tk 2,500 in cash. Police also seized five cocktail-like objects during the raids.
The recovery of narcotics formed a significant part of the operation. Yaba, cannabis and intoxicating syrups remain among the substances frequently targeted by law-enforcement agencies in Dhaka because of their illegal circulation and links to wider criminal networks.
The DMP routinely conducts such operations across its eight crime divisions as well as specialised units. These drives are aimed at detecting suspects, recovering illegal substances and other evidence, and taking action against individuals allegedly involved in criminal offences.
According to Niaz Mehedi, legal procedures against those arrested are currently under way. The 58 cases filed in connection with the operation will be dealt with according to the relevant laws.
