Double Murder Suspect Arrested at Akhaura Border Attempting Fleeing

Immigration authorities at the Akhaura International Border Crossing in Brahmanbaria have arrested a man accused in two separate murder cases while he was attempting to flee across the border into India. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Idris Ali, was detained around midday on Tuesday, 8 September.
Idris Ali, a resident of Jampara village under the Ashulia Police Station in Savar and the son of Ali Ahammad, faces serious charges filed in Dhaka following the political transitions of 5 August 2024. Due to his involvement in multiple active murder cases, law enforcement agencies had previously placed an administrative travel ban preventing him from departing the country.
Immigration officials reported that Idris Ali arrived at the border checkpoint around 10:30 am on Tuesday accompanied by his younger sister and nephew, intending to cross into India as ordinary travellers. However, during the routine verification of passports and travel documents, immigration officers cross-referenced his details with the central criminal database. The system flagged the outstanding arrest warrants and travel restrictions tied to the murder cases registered at Ashulia Police Station. Officers immediately moved to detain him, whilst his accompanying relatives were permitted to leave after verification confirmed no pending charges against them.
Background inquiries reveal that Idris Ali faces grave allegations relating to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement events on 5 August 2024. Case filings allege that he stored and brandished illegal firearms to launch attacks against protesting students and civilians. Local residents also report that he wielded considerable political influence to maintain dominance and engage in corrupt practices in the Ashulia region. When questioned regarding potential affiliation with the Awami League, the suspect denied any political connections.
Sub-Inspector Md Shariful Islam, the officer-in-charge at the Akhaura International Immigration Checkpost, confirmed the arrest details. He explained that officers flagged the travel ban during database checks, leading to immediate detention under orders from higher authorities. The suspect was subsequently handed over to Akhaura Police Station, where procedures are underway to transfer him to Ashulia Police Station for further judicial proceedings.
