Bangladesh witnessed a quiet yet significant administrative transition on Saturday, 28 February 2026, as Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, former Chief Adviser of the caretaker government, officially vacated the Jamuna State Guesthouse. At approximately 3:30 PM, Dr. Yunus departed the historic government residence, heading to his private home in the Gulshan district of Dhaka.

The move was confirmed by Khalequzzaman Chowdhury, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD), who stated that Dr. Yunus had removed his personal belongings from the premises prior to leaving. “All items belonging to the former Chief Adviser were taken with him. The residence is now ready for the commencement of maintenance and refurbishment work,” Chowdhury added.

The vacating of the Jamuna Guesthouse marks the beginning of a comprehensive renovation and restoration programme overseen by the PWD, in preparation for its next official occupant, newly appointed Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. According to officials from the Ministry of Housing and Public Works and the PWD, all interior refurbishments, technical upgrades, and maintenance work are scheduled to be completed within the current month. Once finished, the building will be fully prepared to serve as the official residence of the Prime Minister.

However, it remains uncertain whether Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will take residence at Jamuna immediately. Presently, he continues to reside at his private Gulshan home, with no formal announcement regarding relocation to the state guesthouse.

Officials have emphasised that the transition is part of routine administrative procedures. The refurbishment aims to ensure that Jamuna is equipped with modern facilities, upgraded utilities, and security enhancements while preserving its status as a state guesthouse.
