A lorry driver was murdered by miscreants on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Brahmanbaria, yet his assistant managed to transport the body to Mirsharai following the victim’s dying instructions. The gruesome incident unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday, culminating in the recovery of the body from a parked vehicle later that morning.
At approximately 7:30 am on Tuesday, 14 July, local police recovered the blood-stained body of the driver from a lorry parked in front of the Fardin Model Pump in the South Sonapahar area of Zorarganj union. The deceased has been identified as 56-year-old Jamal Uddin, a veteran driver hailing from the North Char Aicha area of Char Fasson upazila in Bhola district. He was the son of the late Munaf Bepari.
Belal Hossain, the driver’s assistant who survived the ordeal, provided a harrowing account of the journey. The duo had departed from Sherpur in Sylhet on Monday night, transporting a heavy cargo destined for the Chittagong Port. The trip proceeded smoothly until they reached the Uzanisar Bridge area in Brahmanbaria deep into the night. Due to a narrow stretch of the road near the bridge, Jamal Uddin was forced to slow down the vehicle.
Taking advantage of the reduced speed, a gang of four to five miscreants armed with local weapons launched an unprovoked attack on the lorry. The assailants initially shattered the front windscreen before turning their weapons on the driver. Jamal Uddin was hacked indiscriminately with sharp weapons, leaving him with severe, deep wounds across his body.
Despite suffering catastrophic injuries, the driver demonstrated remarkable resilience. He managed to bind his bleeding wounds to stanch the flow of blood, leaned back against the seat, and ordered Belal to take the steering wheel. Fearing further attacks, Jamal Uddin explicitly instructed his assistant not to stop the vehicle under any circumstances and to keep moving forward.
Belal drove the lorry in a state of sheer panic, successfully navigating the vehicle away from the danger zone and reaching Feni. However, due to excessive haemorrhaging, Jamal Uddin succumbed to his injuries along the way. Upon entering Mirsharai upazila, Belal parked the lorry at the Fardin Model Pump, informed fellow transport workers of the tragedy, and subsequently alerted the Zorarganj police.
Mohammad Abdul Halim, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Zorarganj Police Station, stated that a team was dispatched immediately upon receiving the information. Officers retrieved the body from the cabin, noting multiple sharp weapon injuries. The corpse has been sent to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination, and the family of the deceased has been notified. The OC added that because the primary crime took place within the jurisdiction of Brahmanbaria, the relevant local police station there will register the case and lead the subsequent legal investigations.
