DU Hall Representative Suspended Pending Investigation Into Guest Conduct

University of Dhaka authorities at Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall have temporarily cancelled the residential seat allocation of Assistant General Secretary (AGS) Ibrahim Khalil following allegations involving two outside guests accommodated in his room. The decision follows widespread campus unrest triggered by a video recording circulated on social media over the weekend.

The controversy arose on Saturday evening after footage began circulating online showing two visitors admitting to inappropriate conduct inside Khalil’s room on 27 July. In the video, the individuals apologised to attending students and requested that the footage not be made public.

Khalil’s roommate, Onoy Chowdhury, clarified the sequence of events in a public social media statement. He stated that the two guests had been permitted to stay in the room on 27 July, where they were subsequently discovered in a compromising position by resident students. Chowdhury noted that whilst students recorded statements from the individuals, the full video was withheld due to the sensitive nature of the incident. The identities of student witnesses have been kept confidential for security reasons.

Addressing the fallout, Khalil defended his position, stating he had no prior knowledge of the incident. He explained that he had accommodated the two acquaintances on humanitarian grounds after they travelled to Dhaka for medical treatment. Khalil maintained that he was absent from the room when the event occurred and was not informed immediately afterwards. Condemning the conduct, he pledged full cooperation with university authorities and law enforcement in any subsequent proceedings.

During inquiries into the allegations, Khalil provided an audio recording of a telephone conversation with one of the guests. In the recording, the guest admitted that they were led astray by temptation and attempted to engage in the act, but were interrupted when the roommate walked in and witnessed them directly.

Khalil was elected AGS of the Shahidullah Hall Union in the 2025 student union elections under a panel backed by Islami Chhatra Shibir. Muha. Mohiuddin Khan, President of the Dhaka University unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir, confirmed that Khalil remains an active member of the organisation.

Outlining administrative actions, Hall Provost Professor Dr Md Aminul Islam Bhuiyan confirmed that Khalil’s seat allocation has been suspended as a precautionary measure. A formal investigation committee will be established to examine the facts before final disciplinary measures are determined. Meanwhile, Hall Union General Secretary Toukir Hasan stated that an official explanation has been requested from Khalil, and further steps will depend on a detailed review of statements provided by both the AGS and his roommate.

News of the incident sparked immediate anger among residents, leading a group of students to gather near the hall pond at around 10:15 pm on Saturday to hold a protest march and demand strict administrative oversight.
