A devastating tragedy unfolded in Comilla’s Barura upazila on Tuesday morning after two 18-month-old twin sisters drowned in a pond near their home. The deceased toddlers have been identified as Junaira and Taslima, the twin daughters of Jasim Uddin, a resident of Kachiapukuria village.

The incident occurred as the young sisters were playing unsupervised near the edge of a household pond adjacent to their family home. According to local residents, the two toddlers slipped into the water unnoticed by family members. Realising the children were missing shortly afterwards, frantic relatives began searching the premises, only to spot the girls submerged in the pond. They were immediately pulled from the water and rushed to the Barura Upazila Health Complex, but medical intervention came too late.

Dr Pohirul Islam, in-charge of the emergency department at the health complex, confirmed that the twins were brought to the facility at approximately 10:50 AM. Upon arrival, attending physicians examined the toddlers and pronounced them dead, noting that both children had tragically succumbed to drowning before reaching the hospital.

Barura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kazi Najmul Haq stated that law enforcement authorities were notified of the double fatality shortly after the hospital confirmed the deaths. A police team was dispatched to Kachiapukuria village to inspect the scene, conduct preliminary enquiries, and assist the grieving family with necessary legal formalities regarding the unnatural deaths.

Accidental drowning remains a pervasive yet often overlooked public health crisis in rural Bangladesh, particularly for young children living near unfenced natural water bodies. In rural communities across Comilla and adjacent districts, open ponds, ditches, and canals are located immediately outside homesteads, serving as primary sources for bathing and household chores. Toddlers between one and four years of age face an exceptionally high risk of submersion injuries due to developing mobility combined with a lack of physical barriers or continuous adult supervision. Public health advocates routinely emphasise the necessity of installing low-cost protective fencing around household ponds and maintaining vigilant oversight of young infants to prevent such heartbreaking home accidents.
